EXOXƎ
2023
Helmet, organ shaped habitats, kinetic lung back pack, amorfic sculpture, video projections, texts
EXOXƎ was a performance-installation exibited in Norrbotten’s County Art Museum, Kiruna, Sv
The sculptural work emerged during a two year long cooperation with choreographer Simo Kellokumpu`s postdoc artistic research project xeno/exo/astro –choreoreadings. The exhibition “Choreographies of change”was curated by Hampus Berglander.
The project has materialized the relations between outer space, interplanetary culture, queer sci-fi, and choreography through several art works and representational experiments at the crossing-clashing of the astronomical-artistic research questions. I was building sculptures inspierd by conversations and experiments.

Have Space Suit- Will Travel
2023
Helmet, suit with attachabel bio spheres, kinetic lung back pack
The idea of a “space suit” that supports life in harsh environment of outer space, vacuum and temperauture extremes and in itself inhabits generating properties like small greenhouses and inorganic production hubs served as inspiering point of origin. The visors shape incorporated ideas of averted vision, deviting colour vision and detecting light intensity.

Suit for a performance, fysinomical heat molded capsules
A wearable suit that inhabits generating properties like small greenhouses and inorganic production hubs served as inspiering point of origin. Following ideas of biocouture, a category of clothing that is home to either living or hibernating microorganisms. Fashion design, biotechnology, and material engineering harness biology for purposes that are both creative and useful.
From photosynthetic organisms like algae that absorbs carbon dioxide as well as lichens fungi to harness biology for purposes that are both creative and useful and can thrive in a wide range of environments.

multimedia sculptur
190×50× 10 cm
kinetic torso, plexiglass shapes, video footage, screens
“Self-assembly processes are ubiquitous in nature, leading to the incredibly complex and beautiful life we see all around us,”
The work draws inspiration from fully autonomous self-replicating robot assembly system capable of both assembling larger structures, including larger robots, and planning the best construction sequence is still years away but we make important strides toward that goal, including working out the complex tasks of when to build more robots and how big to make them, as well as how to organize swarms of bots of different sizes to build a structure efficiently without crashing into each other.
Once programmed and set free under a random disturbance that gives them the energy to collide with one another, they’re on their own to shapeshift, without any guiding intelligence.

2022
multi media interactive sculpture
In a shaded space the media sculpture “Raconteur” is waiting to be activated. The visitor is handed a golf ball sized item that will activate the machine. The item was based on a Japanese concept of Dorondago in which one forms a fist sized object from dust and then carefully mold and polish it into a delicate shiny sphere. I formed this sphere myself during several weeks. The visitor entering the space can insert the object into a fitting sized cup connected to the sculpture. Having done that the Raconteur will mechanical open its seven panel face and start to speak and tell all steps of its creation.

Interstellar/planetary objects
Interstellar/planetary objects
2021
A box containing 15 unique hand sized objects
metal, ceramics, epoxy molded castings
120x30x30
The work was realized to be used in a collaborative project with Finnish choreographer Simo Kellokumpu and Tuukka Perhoniemi, (director of the Finnish Astronomer Society U.R.S.A.)
The case and objects were build for “Kosmosomok“, a four-act outdoor performance with choreographic and sculptural elements.
During the 90.min guided tour the participants were guided through a time line that was modeled according to the origin of the Universe. Within the narrative there came a moment when gravity starts pulling matter to form first structures and the interstellar/planetary objects were displayed. The participants could choose one of the hand sized objects to carry with them.
The objects are inspired by natural structures, ancient technology and archaeological artifacts.
There are 15 unique crafted pieces in use.

600x200cm
2 channel projection, drawing chalk and dust
“Wax on Wax off” intertwines mechanical motion with painting gestures and video projection with physical material. Westphal was inspired by early methods of mechanical movements and transition – such as wheels or turbines that harness wind or water -, and how their idea could be transported through different medias. In the work the real size projection of the simply constructed kinetic contraptions traces
the tension and release of the mechanical forces. The movements of painting the projection surface interacts with the image.
